Opening hours & best days to visit.
Topkapi Palace is usually open from Wednesday to Monday.
Important: Topkapi Palace is closed every Tuesday.
The palace is usually busiest between 11:00 AM and 03:00 PM, especially in spring, summer, and on public holidays.
Arrive at 09:00 AM when the palace opens, or visit later in the afternoon for a quieter experience. Last entry is usually about one hour before closing time, but it is best to check current opening details before your visit.
How long does a visit take?
Topkapi Palace is a large complex, so your visit can take longer than expected.
If you want to see the Treasury, Holy Relics, courtyards, and Harem comfortably, it is a good idea to leave at least half a day for your visit.
How to get to Topkapi Palace.
Topkapi Palace is located in the historic Sultanahmet area.
The easiest options are Gulhane or Sultanahmet stations. From both stops, it is a short walk to the palace.
Many visitors prefer to walk through the Gulhane Park side, which is one of the easiest and most pleasant ways to reach the entrance.
If you are already visiting Hagia Sophia or the Basilica Cistern, you can easily walk to Topkapi Palace.
Taxis can drop you near the entrance area, but traffic in the Old City can be slow. Public transport is often easier.
Security check & entry rules.
All visitors must pass through a security check before entering the palace.
Bags are screened at the entrance. During busy hours, this can take time.
Large suitcases, bulky bags, and sharp objects are not allowed. Security staff may refuse entry with restricted items.
Arrive early if you want to avoid long entrance lines.
Harem access: what you should know.
The Harem is one of the most popular parts of Topkapi Palace, but it is not included in the standard palace ticket.
To visit the Harem, you need a ticket that includes both palace entry and Harem access.
Because the Harem has many rooms and sections, many visitors prefer a ticket with an audio guide or guided tour. You can also read our detailed Harem guide before your visit.
Photography rules.
Topkapi Palace offers many great photo spots, especially in the courtyards and terrace areas.
You can take photos in most outdoor areas and courtyards.
Photography is usually allowed in outdoor areas, but it may be restricted or fully forbidden in the Treasury and Holy Relics sections. Flash should not be used in sensitive indoor areas.
Take your outdoor photos in the 4th Courtyard, where the views are best.
Accessibility.
Topkapi Palace is partly accessible, but some areas can be difficult because of the historic layout. Some historic rooms and passageways have steps, so full access may not be possible in every section.
The open courtyards are generally flat and easier to move through.
Some indoor sections and connecting paths have steps, slopes, and old stone surfaces.
Visitors using wheelchairs can access many parts of the palace, but some historic sections may be more difficult.
Strollers are possible in many open areas, but some parts may be easier with a baby carrier.
Visiting with children.
Topkapi Palace is suitable for families because of its large outdoor spaces and open courtyards. Since the palace is big, younger children may get tired, so short breaks are helpful during the visit.

Tips for a better visit.
A few simple things can make your visit much easier.
You will walk a lot on stone paths and across large courtyards.
The terrace areas can be windy, even on warm days.
If your ticket includes an audio guide, you will need your phone during the visit.
This helps you avoid both the main entrance line and the busiest indoor sections.
Food & facilities.
There are useful visitor facilities inside the palace complex. Some areas also offer shade, which is helpful in warmer months. It is a good idea to take a short break before heading to the 4th Courtyard and terrace area.
Public restrooms are available inside the palace.
There are benches and shaded areas in some parts of the complex.
There is a restaurant called Konyali inside the 4th Courtyard area. The view is excellent, but prices are usually higher than nearby cafes.
You can also find many cafes and restaurants around Sultanahmet and Gulhane after your visit.
Nearby places to combine with your visit.
